Pretoro is known as the place of the "fusari", able craftsmen who realized spindles ("fusi") to spin wool. Pretoro has in fact a strong link with the mountain and the wool-producing sheep. The spindles were used to transform wool in long filaments, to obtain in this way an increased price of the product.
The wood handicraft tradition is not limited to spindles; the craftsmen make spoons and forks for the kitchen, "lu maccaronar" to make sheet of pasta dough, "lu murtar" to crush spices, and very many other tools for the house.
At the bottom of Pretoro you can find a workshop (Filoso brothers) gathering the principal tools for the wood carving: a lathe, the carving tool to realize the decoration, and the pirographic decorator.
Nearby this shop, a workshop for the restoration of chairs belonging to Marcantonio Fernando has been opened, as well as a shop specialized on the hand painting on wood, ceramics, textiles and woods, named Decó.
In order to remember or link with the mountain, we must cite the stone-cutter Antonello.
His workshop is just below the town center; he cuts and carves stone in many shapes and sizes to create remarkable masterpieces.
You can get more information from Antonello's website: www.sculturediantonello1.tk. If you need more information on Pretoro handicraft in general you can ask the Tourist Office.
